Hi,
We have a rigg in our herd at the moment which i put a rubber ring on in his first week, but obviously not correctly!!
Is it safe to run him with our heifers, i.e. will he be fertile or not?

It is probable he will be infertile, or of very low fertility, especially if the retained testicle is truly abdominal and not trapped somewhere between the inguinal ring and the scrotum. If it is there you may be able to feel it, and if so your vet could remove it and complete the job.
In a purely commercial herd you would probably take the chance on the fertility issue, but with pedigree breeding you need to be 100% sure of parentage so I would not take the chance if he were mine.

Hi Chris; We have had a similar guy, jersey, cut by the vet to complete a botched up job by me A little costly but in order for him to run with our Dexters we had to be sure that he couldn't breed (pedigrees as Duncan said) and our vet said that with half of him intact there was a definate chance. In his case the testical was outside of the abdominal cavity, and noticable. If he had been 'shorted' (in the abdomin) he probably wouldn't have been able to reproduce, although he acted like a bull.
