MY 2 1/2 YEAR OLD HEIFFER IS DUE TO HAVE HER FIRST CALF 3/5/06 ,I NOTICED LAST WEEK A SLIGHT SECRETION OF A THICK WHITISH FLUID COMING FROM HER .IT'S ONLY VERY SLIGHT BUT,IS ALWAYS THERE .SHOULD I BE GETTING IT CHECKED OR IS THIS NORMAL?

I ttle will often have a thick mucous discharge in late pregnancy, sometimes white more often creamy or even yellowish, which is sticky. If is is thin and watery rather than sticky I would have her checked. Otherwise almost certainly OK

I assume you are taking about a vaginal discharge, not mammary or elsewhere.

Cattle will often have a thick mucous discharge with small amounts hanging about in late pregnancy. If the discharge is thick and sticky rather than watery it is probably OK. If it is watery, or if there is a lot of it, might be work getting her checked.

/Duncan ,thankyou for your promt reply,the discharge is vaginal and is creamy/white and thick as per your diagnosis .So hopefuuly everything is normal and nothing to worry about .I will continue to keep an eye on her and inform you if theres any change. Thanks again fot putting my mind at rest, it's so good to have a forum like this!

Our cows often leak mucous when lying down or getting up, in the last couple of months of pregnancy. I too was worried and asked the vet about it. He said not to worry. Its just the pressure of the calf. In the last week before birth, I'm amazed the calf doesn't fall out sometimes. Some of the cows are so huge.
