Hello everyone, & thank you for inviting me to join your discussion group.
My family & I live in the beautiful Perigord Vert area of France.
In a small village called Payzac right on the borders of the Dordogne, Haute Vienne & Correze Departments.
We are hoping to move in the next 12 to 18 months to a smallholding. I have worked for a local beef farmer & have come to realize that although the 'Limousin' cattle found here are fine animals they are not the right ones for a family starting out their new smallholding 'adventure'. After much research we have decided that the Dexter is the right one. As yet we have been unable to find a Dexter herd in France, Holland & Germany yes but not France.
I am sure this is not the case & was hoping one of you might be able to put us in contact with a breeder in France.

I believe a couple of years ago the people I've listed were trying to import some Dexters from the UK. There was some export/import complications and so I'm not sure if the Dexters ever made it to France. They might be someone that you could contact for information:

Fiona and Alan Foster of Etang Fourch 58250 Fous, Burgundy, France.

Thanks Richard
I remember hearing or reading the same story a couple of years ago
I think I may have even filed it somewhere!
Being as protectionist as the French tend to be I bet they are still being as difficult as they can when it comes to UK exports to France.
I will try your contacts and see how they got on.
Steve.

Hello all
Well I am that person who's moved to France and tried to Import Dexters.
Richard I am well impressed, you still have our address!!

The news is we still do not have any Dexters almost 2 years on and we are still waiting for the d**n BSE ban to be lifted. Bill Osbourne has been a real champion of my cause, but the French being the French, they keep getting fined for not allowing British beef and beef products into France, all to no avail. Whilst the French farmers control what beef the french folk eat, it is a good political move by the government to keep the farmers happy and stop them blockading ports etc. So the wait must continue, I have looked at the French cows (in desperation!) but they cannot come close to our Dexter, they are just soooo perfect for what I want.

I am hopefull that I may have found a small herd in the Normandy region of France, to begin, a small foundation herd. Although I am not sure of lines etc at this time.

I will keep you posted on my efforts to be a Dexter owner
Fiona
