Im about to take my first short legged steer to slaughter. What amount of beef should i exspect?

How long is a bit of string? But you will need an empty medium sized chest freezer (at least) to freeze it down. Good luck and make sure they label it!!

If you use a weighband to measure girth tight behind the shoulders, this will give a fair idea of liveweight, and the carcase weight should be around 55% of that, then you have to take off bones etc to get a weight of useable meat. Others selling more meat than I do will be able to give a guestimate of proportion of bones to meat. If you don't have access to a weighband measure the girth in centimetres as tight as you can and I can tell you what my band says the weight is.
