I have a friend who has has the misfortune to have 5 steers escape - these are Redpoll and Redpoll crosses (Dexters never behave like that do they?!). All have been located in 3 different places, but are fairly wild especially the 2 Redpolls. Just approaching the field sends them running. Has anyone any ideas how these two might be captured ?

If it is possible get hold of some older cows, ideally from same herd but it not from a dairy herd as long as there are no "biosecurity" issues, and let the cows into the same field as the wild escapologists. Give them a little time to meet and the pen them as a group. I know it is not always possible but I have used such method myself when a totally crazy charolais bullock escaped from the local slaughterhouse, ready to kill any one who approached, owners and slaughterman wanted to shoot it with a rifle, police refused permission since it was in ground surrounding gas storage tanks. Eventually they took up my suggestion and released a heifer from the slaughterhouse lairage and they were back in in a very short time.
