Dexter Sale Prices

Attended a store cattle sale at Leek Market, Staffordshire yesterday as a couple of Dexters had been entered and was interested to see what type they were and what the demand would be from buyers. The first to be sold was an 8 year old short legged black cow (not in calf) the animals are not weighed prior to sale but I would imagine the cow would be 450Kg +, good solid cow with good conformation. The bidding started at £300 and was sold to a meat buyer for £755. Not sure if this is a record price for a cull Dexter.
The second cow to be sold was a 27 month old short legged Black Heifer again free of the bull. This Heifer was well fleshed with good conformation. This one also sold for £755, the meat buyer of the cow was the underbidder but not sure if the purchaser bought the Heifer for breeding or again would it enter the food chain.
Both animals were sold without Pedigree certificates so again it emphasises the current prices being attained for both cull cows and finished cattle sold through markets.
Given the prices achieved at Leek, breeders should ensure they sell their Dexters for prices that reflect the prices commercial cattle are making and cover the cost of production and give the breeder a good profit on the animals they sell.
