Drought?The Weather

Post by Saffy »

How is everyone coping?
Anyone having to feed hay yet?
Anyone struggling for water for the animals?

It was very hot here a couple of weeks ago but it's since returned to bearable temperatures and we've had enough rain to freshen the grass.

i have been feeding hay since mid July, along with feed blocks. My sheep were on a field away from our small holding. I brought them back on Saturday , there seemed no point in me ferrying hay round to them and the bigger problem was that the 1000 litre rain fed water system was about to run dry.. The fields around me in West Suffolk are all parched and anyone with livestock is having to feed. Luckily I have very few animals these days so it is manageable..

We put out a round feeder and a bale of hay as we ran out of grass today. Even if we get a good amount of rain this week, there won't be any grass for weeks. Even the clover has given up and that is deep rooted. The hazel trees have quite a few yellow leaves as well.
