Didn't manage to get over to Carlisle for the auction on Saturday, how did it go?

Duncan MacIntyre said he had a better trade than the Lanark sale.
My red short-leg heifer born Jan, 3rd place in show, went for £380 to a herd in Fife.
My two non-short black heifers born Feb both made £220, one has gone to Kilmarnock.
I don't think I would have done that well at York.
I didn't see the other Dexter cattle sold but friends who asked if I could take cattle home for them, if need be, didn't buy as the lots they were interested in made £100 more than they were prepared to pay.

There was a considerable number in a herd dispersal from the Isle of Man, techincally not part of the Borders Dexter Group sale but went through the ring immediately after, and will have influenced prices. Some of their prices copied from Brian McAllister, were Lot 67 - £ 180, 68 - £360, 69 - not sold?, 70 - 200, 71 350, 72 - 360, 73-310, 74-320, 75-350, 76 - not forward?, 77- 370, 78- not forward?, 79-480, 80-300, 81-460, 82-350, 83-320, 84-350, 85-340, 86-390, 87??, 88-350, 89??, 90-360, 91-340, 92-450, 93-300, 94-400, 95??, 96-400, 98-300, 101-300,.

There were quite a few of them had been bred by Anne Gates and by Stuart Creasey, but not all the calves with them were pure and/or registered, and a number of unregistered cows.

When selling at such a sale I find it very hard to get much idea of what other individual lots are making, but mine, three two year plus heifers, were £750 with good heifer calf, £580 with bull calf, and £480 with no calf at foot, calf lost because I was working on mainland when she needed a wee pull, so no fault of her own.

Although lower end prices should probably have been higher it was a good day, and certainly a busy day with lots of interest from both established breeders and from new comers looking to make a first purchase. Of course there was a lot of meeting of old friends too and a very good atmosphere. The cattle were (except the dispersal sale ones) inspected by Mary Kay and Robin Murray, judged by Steve Danrbrook (who of course did not show any of his own!) and auctioneer Scott has a good manner, pays attention to the info available on each lot, and really does try to get decent money for each lot.

My total for three lots at Lanark was about £1200, at Carlisle £1800. But that does not mean we should not be building the Lanark sale as well as it is a long way from the north of Scotland to Carlisle and there is an increasing need for a recognised sale further north.
