I now have a stock of "Managing Breeds For a Secure Future" by Prof Philip Sponenberg and Donald Bixby for sale at £15, please send cheques made to Burnside Dexters to me at Burnside, Ascog, Isle of Bute PA20 9ET.

Prof Sponenberg is now one of DCS Genetic Advisors, and this book is a wonderful source of information on managing the breeding from individual herds to whole breeds, what breeds are and how they work, and how Breed Societies may best ensure the future of their breed.

I will send a cheque, it sounds like a very interesting book indeed, I did talk to the man himself about it at a few months back.

Cheque in post. I see you can also download it as an e-book.

I'd like to reserve a copy to collect next month (I don't think I'd have much time for reading in the meantime).

If you're at Carlisle Sale, I'll buy a copy then. Otherwise I'll put a cheque in the post.

Book arrived today. Many thanks Duncan. As I am presently laid low with sciatica :( I am glad to have something interesting to read.

Mine has also arrived, it is easier to read than I had expected.... I had thought it would be very heavy going, highbrow and learned but I was pleasantly surprised!

The fact that the book is so easy to read is one of the reasons I am so keen to have it read by as many DCS members as possible. The authors have a gift for explaining things in such a way that most of us can understand, which is so essential if knowledge is to be shared and used. Modern publishing and printing is also a bit of a marvel - once Prof Sponenberg had put me in touch with the American Livestock Conservancy it only took about 7 to 10 days for me to have copies in my possession at a fraction of the cost they were for sale on Amazon. I am not selling them to make a profit -just the cost plus the cost of post and packing as near as I could do it. In less than a week I have orders for more than half of those I ordered, but I will be happy to get more if they are wanted. Maybe all our councilors have copies already since they have appointed one of the authors as a genetics advisor to DCS.

Really enjoyed the read. Something for everyone. Those who have been associated with the breed will find that the book strikes a chord but unfortunately it offers no solutions to the issues raised with regard to the management of a breed society.

No one book will provide all the solutions we need Jac, but it may well be a helpful resource.
