identification of cattle at show

Since the passports became legal and we all have to keep records of all our movements it has always seemed very trusting to not check that the animals at shows are not checked in ref to their passports
if there was a health issue, one would assume that every exhibitor at the show would be served notice. However i do not show very often, but i have certainly seen exhibitors arrive late and leave early and not get their passports register. Not only does this compromise the show, but it puts other people at risk. No one wants to point the finger at anyone in particular, but i can assure you that if there was a health out break, i would happily shop any culprit that i knew was not playing fair. However in this country hopefully no one is judged guilty until proved so. If this unfortunate situation results in every show checking all eartags, i for one will say YES. Unfortunately most people who help at shows are volunteers, so its only one more job they have to do :(

Yes it should be the shows that check all cattle passports ,if there is a problem it is then on their head ,and it would be their responsibility to take the appropriate action. ......It is not for the dexter cattle society to dig into a members affairs to punish them.
Many members substitute animals not in the catalogue, very often this can be a good thing ,as ,with falling numbers at shows at least there is a reasonable number of cattle in each glass,we need the numbers to keep the shows going.
If the society wishes showing animals not in the catalogue to be an issue ,the way to go was to announce their views and protocols on such matters.

Yes the shows are responsible for checking the identification of animals & that the passports correspond with the animals taken, which some shows do very thoroughly also physically checking that all eartags are present & fitted and so they should too - as (Carol Ann) it is a CRIMAL OFFENCE to transport cattle without the correct paperwork or ear tags fitted !

Carol Ann are you suggesting that if a show TRUSTS the exhibitors to be HONEST & present the correct passports for their animals it is their own fault when a less scrupulous exhibitor fails to do so - therefore putting both the bio security of every other exhibitor at risk as well as the future of the show itself ?

Also Carol Ann if the shows allow it certainly is a good thing that substitute animals are shown but if the show states that it is not allowed doing so is BREAKING THE RULES and surely if you take substitute animals you should take the correct passports with them ? again Carol Ann you seem to be trying very hard to make light of a very serious situation !

Well Barry you seem to be taking your frustrations about the lack of communication from council and lack of show results out on me now. As I have said and will say for last time ! I do not condone cheating ,if there is a problem with passports it is a serous matter but it is the show/ BCMS who should be dealing with these matters. Many shows allow substitutes which as I said can be a good thing to keep the numbers in the class up,which in turn , keeps the shows going.
As you quite rightly said, showing dexters is a perfect shop window for them and as anybody who knows me well will know I am very passionate about Dexters and would not like ANYTHING to prevent shows from having Dexters there.

Carol Ann

I am definitely not taking anything out on you, I am merely responding to comments that you have made on here and expressing my opinions on these.
