Does anyone know when the 2014 show results will be shown on the Dexter Website. Not urgent, just interested to see how people have done over the summer and how many entries were forward.

Sadly the show results have not been published yet, there are ongoing investigations with authorities about cattle at shows. Sorry but please dont ask any more, the results will be broadcast as soon as it is possible.

I do hope council are looking at All exhibitors who showed the wrong animals at the national show and not just picking on one person ,as seems to be the norm at the moment.
It the responsibility of the council to help and treat all members in the same way and not to be seen to single out individuals for ,special treatment, or reprimand.

What ever is happening about announcing the showing results for 2014 ?

Mark Bowles your response from over a month ago has now worn rather thin as surely the Society have had more than enough time to do their investigations and come to a decision !

Also Carol Ann your comment about picking on a member for showing the wrong animals is a bit misinformed, as it is very easy for anybody to look at results published by shows and see the extent of the problem - it does not seem to be just wrong animals (ie: substitutions) but wrong ages (ie: animals that are too old for the class entered) etc etc !

I personally feel that the whole situation is a complete shambles and I for one have lost all faith in the Society & its Council Members ability to bring this whole sorry tale to an end and publish the showing results.

Sorry you feel that way Barry, my hands are tied i am afraid, legal things get in the way and this sorry affair has to be completed properly.

Members can of course check show results but that is a far cry from council members using members money to ,yet again , against a showing member for what after all is not a real crime . My real beef is that many members have in the past and I suspect always will no quite follow the rules , I am not in anyway condoning these actions but there are ways to deal with such matters that don't involve actions that are way over the top . As reported on another thread it is not the council remit to victimise members ,but to help and support members and to ensure the dexter breed remains true to type for many years to come.

Carol Ann I am a bit confused by your reply to my comment ???

You suggest that the society are carrying out actions that are way over the top & that a member is being victimised - do you therefore know more than you are saying on here ?

Also you seem to be trying to suggest that a member has been "not quite following the rules" seems to be trying to make very light of what has actually been happening - my suggestion that anybody can view the results of Shows online can then see without little effort the extent of the real problem ! there seems to be an awful lot of blatant cheating going on - do you also condone this Carol Ann ?

The shows are the Shop window of our breed and most new & prospective new keepers visit the shows to see the animals and talk to exhibitors prior to or looking to purchase animals - therefore the shows and number of exhibitors at shows are vital to the Society & the Breed, the goings on this season will definitely have an adverse effect on the amount of Dexter's seen at shows next season.

My comment was that the Society should publish the end of season results and currently it appears that Mark is hiding behind a smoke screen suggesting "legal things" are refraining the results from being announced / published. If there really are valid reasons that the results cannot be announced then why are the members not kept informed of what is going on and when they are likely to be ?

As I said ,I do not condone any cheating. The council are suggesting cheating has gone on at Newbury not me, I merely said there should be better ways of dealing with the problem .

I have not heard anybody from the Society mention cheating, I however have found numerous amounts of blatant cheating simply by checking the results published online by shows and checking against the animals details on the DCS online herdbook !

How then do you suggest the problem should be dealt with Carol Ann ?

Carol Ann

how would you (as a Judge yourself) view it if the "calf" you just placed 3rd in the calf under 12 months class later turned out to be well over 13 months old and the heifer which you placed 1st in the heifer under 18 months old class turned out to be actually 21 months old ? or would you see this as "not quite following the rules" ?

Oh and by the way from the results published on the Royal Norfolk show website, seems to be what happened there this year !!!!

As someone who's only done a tiny amount of showing, many years ago, I'd be interested to know how much value you'd say that showing adds, either on an individual herd level or at breed level? And how much it costs when you consider the time & other costs involved.

In reply to Rob, showing at local venues is invaluable for training youngstock, generates enquiries for bull hire since the offspring are on show and can lead to the odd sale. On a good day, prize money covers fuel costs and a beer and, generally, a good day out has been enjoyed. It certainly raises awareness of me (hence the soubriquet "the lady with the Dexters") and the herd.
20 odd years ago I dipped a toe in the big county shows. Never again. It was financially crippling. When there were classes at Gt Yorks, I gave serious thought to entering but the straw on the camel's back was the £40 charge to pitch a tent! I'm glad I did it back in the day, as at the time other people locally talked of giving it a go but didn't put their money where their mouth was. This was just before BSE broke in 1996, so there was the lure of international buyers looking for stock. There were certainly interested Scandinavians at E. of Eng. That all ground to a halt and removed the reason for taking hill cattle south, where they were going to be last in the line up.

I have not really given much thought to the actual added value per animal as this would be very difficult to gauge, although it obviously had a massive affect on the prices achieved by the Knightsway herd at their dispersal sale ! My comment was more that it gives potential buyers the opportunity to look at stock & discuss the breed with exhibitors at shows - so benefitting all who are selling Dexter’s as well as the Society by attracting new members. When I originally looked to buy Dexter’s I visited several shows looking at the cattle to get a good idea of what I should be looking for.
Echoing what Louisa said on a good day you may cover your entry fees with the prize money but it comes nowhere near the true cost of preparing, travelling to shows & showing the animals, I have not (and would be unlikely to) calculate the actual cost of showing as it would probably be a scary figure and put us off attending shows.
I try to attend as many shows as possible throughout the season with my family and treat it as a good fun hobby and some of the larger shows which you stay at for several days as our holiday.
As well as being good training for the cattle I personally feel that it is good life experience for youngsters, my children initially picked their own cattle to show and have stuck with them thereafter – my youngest son has a cow which is now expecting her 4th calf which he has been showing since she was a calf herself and the joy of watching him receive Breed Champion with his homebred animal at a Royal Show is in my opinion more important than money. I am certain that the responsibility of looking after, preparing & showing their own animals, as well as the show environment, has been a major factor in my children’s journey to maturity.

Thanks Barry & Louisa - perhaps this subject deserves it's own thread.

When I started with Dexters it was with the full intention that I was going to show them, and although I enjoyed the experience, I just found it prohibitively expensive and I haven't suffered for lack of enquiries for breeding stock over the years. I just wondered if anyone might be able to put a figure on it for the breed as a whole. I too viewed it as a hobby, as opposed to anything else, but I was curious as to whether other people do track it as a herd expense.

I know some farmers in other breeds that do show as a part of their herd promotion but I notice a tendancy towards them relying purely on showing as their means of promotion, and therefore it's little doubt that it would be important to their herd finances. You do see some fancy trailers at the shows though, and you wouldn't exactly describe our trailer as fancy! :)
