Re: The Official York Sale 2014 Thread
I'm not taking cattle this year. Partly because I have primitive sheep to sell and last year the sheep sale started at 11am instead of the traditional 12 noon. The cattle were still going through the ring when the sheep started & I couldn't be in two places at once. It looks like I will have to alternate which species I take to York in future, or take one species to Carlisle.
Judging by the other thread, there is no merit in even thinking about Melton Mowbray!

It seems like not many other people are taking cattle this year either, the catalogue only has 50 Dexter lots made up of 6 each of registered and unregistered cows & calves, 3 each of cows, 11 registered heifers, 2 registered bulls, 11 steers and a crossbred heifer.
Re: The Official York Sale 2014 Thread
will be taking the trailer as a few we may be interested in, in the catalogue the pigs are before cattle, wonder if thats the running order on sale day as the pigs have previously been sold after the cattle.

Yes, I noticed that, perhaps they've changed it around to try to avoid people leaving after the cattle.SteveM wrote:will be taking the trailer as a few we may be interested in, in the catalogue the pigs are before cattle, wonder if thats the running order on sale day as the pigs have previously been sold after the cattle.
I'm wondering whether the catalogue, with fewer 'regular' vendors will reduce the prices, due to buyers not turning out, or increase them due to a similar demand for a smaller selection of stock.

will have buying head on so expect prices to be high

I won't, so I expect they'll be so low that I'll be tempted into bidding.
Thankfully there aren't any unregistered bulls, to drag the averages down, and more steers might help push it up a bit.

If potential purchasers don't get fixed up, I could do with reducing numbers. Find me in the sheep lines, Manx Loaghtans.

I have sold my bull privately so Eagleridge Edward will not be at the sale.
Re: The Official York Sale 2014 Thread
That was unfortunately, the only animal I've seen pre-advertised for this sale. Many of the steers might not turn up either as per Spring 2013.ann wrote:I have sold my bull privately so Eagleridge Edward will not be at the sale.

Re: The Official York Sale 2014 Thread
Not very good.
I am not sure if "not sold" animals should be included except at £0. Quite often the auctioneer is just pretending there are bids there till he gets near the reserve. If still none he will stop. If the seller then says quietly to him "just let it go" he says back "I can't there are no bids" - so certainly misleading to include the supposed top bid for not sold lots.

Re: The Official York Sale 2014 Thread
I've edited to exclude the not solds.
Perhaps the prices weren't helped by my not bidding most of the time. Most of the steers were sold in 3's or 4's. A few animals didn't turn up & some weren't quite as described in the herd book.

Re: The Official York Sale 2014 Thread
I will disagree with Duncan in this instance as there was definetly people bidding, but they wanted to pick them up cheaply. Several dealers where around the ring.I am not sure if "not sold" animals should be included except at £0. I'm not sure if these sales are the way forward for good dexters as if you are looking for clean cattle, maybe marekts are just not the place to buy cattle. However there was definetly some bargins so i hope the people who bought will enjoy their dexters and become dedicated to our lovely breed. they may never get rich but hopefully they will get a lot of enjoyment from them
