I was very pleased with the results for the older cows, less so for the heifers but they may improve a bit- they are April/May calved after outwintering with small amount of silage only. I had hoped to have some of the Scottish Group along for the day, but we had booked a holiday leaving Bute on 23rd, asked for assessment before then, and just managed to get it done on the afternoon of 22nd, with all my groups for bulling to sort out and transport to different places, it was after 10.30 before I got them all in the right places! It was not a day for coping with visitors as well. We left Bute on 23rd as planned, returned last night having visited Skye, Harris, Lewis and St Kilda, quite a week. We visited Burnside Tansy, now owned by Gaye and Leo Murray, and at 17years old the oldest of our breeding as far as I know. Pics of Tansy can be seen on Burnside Dexter Cattle on Facebook.

Thanks to Stephanie for flagging this up, I just did not have time to post before leaving on Monday.

I would encourage anyone who is interested in thye breeding of their cattle to have this done. The individual results show more detail on different sections, you can see where your herd strengths and weaknesses lie, and what strengths you need to look for in future sires to improve your herd. Showing is all very well, but at the end of the day only the pick of even the best herds will be shown. I have included all my eligible females except on, Dill, who having been isolated as an IR, during which time she calved, separated from the calf in case she was taken, unsuccessfully reunited with the calf after passing retest, now developed eye problems so not in the best of shape for assessment. I hope to have more heifers calved next year and will probably get them done, and re-do some of the others as the mark may go up but not down.

Lets see more folk doing this, it is a great opportunity for objective trained assessors to tell us about our herds. It is not a big ordeal - the worst worry for me was could I get them all in in time for the assessor coming! In fact they were in in plenty time as the field they were in was getting bare and they were keen to move.
