life goes full circle, a cautionary tail.

Post by SteveM »

Our first dexter Braemar emma came to us in 2001 from a local butcher who had bought her in to fatten for beef, she was in calf to her own father and calved at 71 weeks old.

She went for beef summer last year as she was lame and not holding in calf.

We have her last daugher Humberdale Emma in the herd born 22nd november 2012.

Anyone guessed where this is going?

Emma appeared to be bagging up last weekend so we put her in a loose box on her own.

Fearing sleepless nights to come and potential vet intervention we wait to see what happens.

Over night and unaided she has had a red calf, at 67 weeks of age.

So make sure the heifer calves are removed from the bull as accidents can happen

I have heard of earlier births but not a recommended thing to do. I always inject when heifers are in any way vulnerable to being in calf, it has no bad effects and seems a very common sense thing to do.
Red heifer eh!!! very nice.
