Greenhand needing the help of some jedi's

Post by rosslamb »

Hi all,

New to this site, but been doing some research on some animals to keep on a small holding after buying a house with 16 acres in Perthshire. I am obviously not away to jump into it, but over the next 12 to 18 months, after renovations have been completed, I'd like to get a start and I'd like for it to be centred around Dexters.
In the meantime, what should I be learning and what steps should I be making to give me a good start with them? I am fortunate in that there is a cow shed (80' x 50' I think) as part of the property. The grazing is split over 2 equal sized paddocks.

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated...May also be worth some of my homemade biltong. Gratis of course!!

Thanks

Ross

Hello Ross, have you made contact with any of the Scottish Dexter group? Chairman Robin Walker is in Crieff, Secretary Sue Rimmer on the Isle of Kerrera. There are now upwards of 50 dexter herds in Scotland. It can be a great help to visit a few and see what others are doing with them, how they manage them etc. I can email you a copy of our last newsletter, either as a pdf or publisher file if you pm me here with your email address.
