For all of you with abandoned new borns my advice is persevere , I had a second calver on a horrible night abandon her calf and decided to steal another and for a full day after she followed calf and mother . Managed to get her in but she would have nothing to do with her calf . For 5 days I had her in the crush three times a day and now at last she has taken her calf and is now quite possessive .
Remember if the calf has not suckled get colostrum in as soon as possible , cost from your vet in powder form if you can't strip the cow .

We have a cow who regularly takes a day or two to take to her calf but by chance our labrador came near the pen - her attitude changed from not wanting the calf at all to becoming very protective
so as she is like this every year we now just get the dog near the pen and it works wonders.
Like Robin we find the dexter crush is something we could not live with out as if we get dozy calves and new heifers that dont want to stand put them in crush pull the sides out and usually after a couple of days they are both ok
