I've heard recently that all Show Judges currently on the DCS list of approved judges have received a letter in which they are asked to submit a signed statement of their date of birth.
The reason for this, apparently, is that the DCS have been unable to obtain insurance for judges over the age of 70.
This seems slightly bizarre for two reasons;
1. Isn't it the responsibility of the host show to provide insurance for officials at their show? and
2. Many other Breed Societies use judges who appear to be over the age of 70.
Surely the Society should be pursuing all avenues to ensure that we are able to retain judges who have a wealth of experience both inside the show ring and on their holdings?
This must be a situation which can be resolved?

Dexter Judges to be culled?
Re: Dexter Judges to be culled?
Isn't anyone from the Society able to shed any light on this please?

Re: Dexter Judges to be culled?
I am a little worried as I haven't heard which slaughterhouse I am going to. Must check my passport is up to date!
Went through this years ago when I was on council.
Society needs insurance for field oficers and inspectors as they are on official society business.
Judging is not official society business, Don't need to insure judges, as you say Malc it is the responsibility of the show society, not the DCS! Fact it is a waste of money for the DCS to do it. I am not worried about being insured anyway.
It is debatable whether or not it contravenes the equality act. Prejudice or discrimination on grounds of a persons age doesn't just apply in the workplace after the 1.10.12.
There are about eleven of us as far as I can work out. How many others of you were were upset by the letter? I was on a point of principle.
I am trying to gather a bit more info. at present.

Re: Dexter Judges to be culled?
This is something in progress, it does not only cover judges but aspects of insurance covering people doing business on behalf of the DCS in many forms. A volatile matter that has caused a lot of straight talking on council for a number of meetings, not easy. Sorry but detail cannot be discussed on here or until there is a satifactory conclusion for everyone.
