I have just had to treat a week old bull calf for the efect's of fly strike, we check the sheep regularly for this, but to find his underside from navel to testicals coverd in maggot's was to say the least horrifying, although after 2 days of treatment it seems to have cleared up and he is up and suckling again, but I thought I shoud warn you it can happen in calve's, I know after dehorning it sometimes happen's but this is easier to spot, I do not know if anyone else has experianced this but it is not a pretty sight, so check those new born's underside's.

I'd keep an eye on the calf too, as flies seem to have a nose for any kind of health weakness. We had one struck for the first time ever about three years ago and the calf was a poor doer.

I have not seen fly strike in Dexters, but I have one client with Highland cattle who has to treat all calves every summer to prevent it, or he will have quite a number of cases. Much hairier animals of course.

I have noticed a large number of flies on my calves, is it safe to use Spot On? Obviously at a smaller dose than I would use on their mums.
