At Burwarton show 2011 I saw some Dexters and knew I had to have some! Since then my husband has bought me Chloe, Eve,Tisa and Tango. I read a paragraph in a book on Dexters which said "Dexteritis: a disease that seems to creep over you, before you know it you've got a small herd. Once you have Dexteritis, there is no cure!" I think this could be true as my husband has a commercial herd but even he seems to have it too! He spends a lot of time with my girls as do my children. It has been really good to have found this discussion board to help us through our first few months, I hope everyone has a Happy New Year. :)

Welcome to the site and do take care as I started with one dexter plus calf to keep my horse paddocks tidy. The horses have long gone to the big pastures in the sky and I now have 45 dexters!!!

You have been warned

:) :) :)

Hello,

So nice to have new members on here! :)

When I bought my first ones, an elderly mum with a bull calf, a heifer and a steer, I promised myself that I would never have more than six that would be too silly, after all they are my hobby .......well, having just sold six, oddly enough I still have some dexters - eleven actually!!! :?

Our first venture into Dexters was to have ONE house cow to provide the family with milk, and rear the calf as well, then sell calf.

25 years later we sometimes reach 40 in total.

We actually moved house to accomodate more of them, it's true, it's a desease, no cure found yet!I must brag about the fact that i have trimmed down to 39 at the moment, from arounf 50+, but thats down to lack of feed not any medical cure.

I was NEVER going to have a cow - they ate as much as a horse and you couldn't ride them! 20 years on after starting out hand raising 1 Jersey heifer I now have over 50 Dexters (cows, calves, steers and bulls), still have 4 horses and ponies at home. Dexteritis has definately got me - and I'm sure it's incurable!! :P

yes beware we started just 4 years ago with just 3 since then ive built a cattleshaed 75x40 bought various bits of kit we now have our own tractors baler etc etc and upto 38 head and have taken on more grass its definately a thing that takes over your life. but on a hot summers eve when you are in the field with them and they all come over for a fuss it makes it all worth it. and you have forgotten all those cold frozen morning when the drinkers were froze solid. its great for the children to be involved in such a way of life and its a hobby that can at least pay something back to you in beef sales.
