Hi,

I have a 6 year old cow who has a prolapse so we will need to cull her. We would like to put her in the freezer for our own use but can't find anyone who can kill her for hume consumption, it appears they have to be younger then 48 months. Does anyone know how I can get round this Rule or know the cure for a bowl prolapse. I live in the Republic of Ireland.

Debbie

As far as I am aware there is no such rule. It used to be that you had to pay more to kill it after 48 months because of the compulsory bse test, but this has just been raised to 72months so it would still apply to your cow.As long as an animal is not born pre 1996 there is no reason for it not to go in the foodchain, what do you think are in all the beefburgers!.

There should be no problem killing her as the compulsory bse test now only applies to over 72 months in ROI.Any local abattoir should do the necessary.
Where are you?

That is very interesting. We are in Co Cavan. I have contact the guy that usually kills our animals and he has said that he is only licenced for cows up to 48 months. I phoned the department of agriculture in cavan and they confirmed this, so what can I do. Where do I find out???? :?
