Dexter Cattle For Sale Discussion Board

Mother and daughter calved side by side in the field only 10 minutes apart (last week). Both licked both calves from birth, mother ate daughter's afterbirth. All four are inseparable, but the daughter, who was calving for the first time, seems so enthusiastic she is doing the lion's share of the feeding, Is this common, and do I let nature take its course?

I heard of a farmer recently who had a set two cows and two calves like that, and suckled each others dam and their own. I can't remember whether they were related, but he just left them to it. I suppose the only thing I'd watch out for is one not being suckled, then perhaps separate them? Or I would anyhow.
