Hi do any of the dexter council know what
is happening about the next congress now the American Dexter club has split. I know the South Africans would have liked to host it but felt it was probably not a very safe place to host the event at the moment.

According to Dexters International (the central body set up after the first congress to ask for bids and set venues for future Congresses) no bids have been solicited for a third Congress. International response at this time has been lukewarm because nothing new has happened in the Dexter world to justify one, and it would be merely a social event. There seems little merit in holding another Congress within the next few years unless one or more countries can come up with a valid theme and get a consensus of international support. Perhaps by 2010.........

Hi Carol

Its certainly refreshing to learn that the dexters are one breed with no problems worth discussing world wide or no intrest in how other countries are marketing and breeding dexters.

Maybe thats why we get the pet label from most commercial cattle breeders.

I found the subjects discussed at the last two congress's very intresting and the shows at the end were certainly the icing on the cake.

There are a lot of people out there with good ideas and this is one way to share them.

However if no one offeres to hold one, then I guess there's nothing one can do about apathy. (now retiring to find my flak jacket )

Ann,
don't shoot me, I'm just the mesenger, :) I was told that roughly only 45 overseas visitors went to the first congress, and 37 the second, so without a valid reason to attend, few countries would pay to send delegates.

Surely if you just want to talk about how other countries market the breed etc, that could be done online by chatting to Dexter breeders around the world on other forums, do you go to the US forums or any others and talk about that sort of thing? Apathy, huh?

The logistics of putting on such an event, I'm sure are many and costly, so I can understand that "valid reasons" are needed.

Ann,

I believe that the original plan here in the States for the Congress would have been for a conservation theme this time. The delicate balance of conservancy breeding and production breeding would have certainly been applicable and timely to Dexters. Hosting these events takes a lot of commitment by all the host members to Dexter cattle and this commitment along with the international exchange of ideas I believe is beneficial to the breed. So like yourself, I have a great deal of interest and hope to see the World Dexter Congress continue on in 2006 and beyond.
