A new PhD student here at Durham would like to be able to collect some lower jaws of Dexter cattle aged 15 months or older. Exact date of birth and death and details of lifetime feeding regime would be needed. The student is looking at the pattern of oxygen isotopes laid down in the tooth enamel with the eventual aim of deducing seasonality of calving in archaeological cattle.
If anyone in northern England/southern Scotland is prepared to help, please get in touch. The project supervisor will liase with DEFRA/VMD for appropriate licences and will collect, or will delegate me to collect, bones from abattoirs.
