I was reading the Bulletin recently re the Crossgar Beef Scheme. I have left a message for the coordinator Steve Adcock but not heard back as yet. I was wondering if anyone knew if they collect from any abbatoir or just selected ones and what the base price deadweight was? I kill about 12-15 animals each year - some go to a butcher who pays £3/kg deadweight and the rest are sold privately. I have plenty of waiting customers but private selling is fairly time consuming and thought it might be worth putting a few through this scheme.

I believe that the animals are exported live to Ireland, and that Steves involvement is in the rounding up of animals to a central location for collection on behalf of the sellers, but I may be wrong.

From speaking to Steve in the last week or so, they use 4 or 5 nominated abattoirs in England and then handle carcases.

I don't imagine any of the abbatoirs are near us then as we are in North Northumberland but will find out - not keen on the live export!

Hi,
The animals come over here on the hook. I believe that there is a slaughter-house in Carlisle that is used.

From the last beef meeting I believe there are five or so abbatoirs where the animals can be sent to (but probably expanding). The animals are killed there and collected as Howard says dead on the hook.

If you can sell them at £3 / kg deadweight, and the weights are true, that's a good price and I would stick with that. We've been getting £2.85 lately. There is also the TBMM Scheme if you have a participating butcher nearby?

Is there anyone in the Bucks/Northants/Oxon area who would be interested in sending some Dexters to Crossgar? I have maybe two that will be ready before August this year but Uttoxeter is a fair distance for us, if several people could make a load up then arrange a lorry for transport and share the cost this may be a way of selling for those of us that only have a couple ready per year. Just a thought.

Thanks Clive,
I will contact these two and see if they are interested in some Dexter. Its very difficult to know where to sendthem as we probably only have one or two per year. Our first two we have sent via our local farm shop and then had the meat back for ourselves to sell and eat.
