Is it just me or has anyone else had trouble getting their cows in calf with AI this year? For the last two years we have AI'd our five cows and had only two that needed a second straw. This year we have had three come bulling again, one having a third straw tomorrow morning [early!]
I mentioned my problem to Jo Kemp at the sale at Carlisle last Saturday and she said she had heard of others and suggested getting a mineral lick which I have done.Perhaps I should have asked Duncan who was also there!
I also have AI'd three heifers this month, one seems to have taken but I am worried that it is getting late in the year and I have only three straws left! Any advice?

I normally double straw and find that my maiden heifers take without problem but my older cows more difficult . My vet now uses implants followed by and injection 9-10 days later . two days after this i remove the implants , two days after that the cattle were very ready and were inseminated by the Genus technician , one straw two days running . the three cattle i have had AI d are now three and a half months in calf .

Is it possible for you to either fence off an area with electric fencing or strip graze?

We have strip grazed quite a bit this year to make the grass last them longer it would work just as well for dieting but you would have to give very little at a time and be quite strict.
