Anyone calving, beware fly strike. Had to help with a local friend last night, new born calf they found covered in maggots. They've cleaned them off and washed the calf. Last night even though the calf was clean and dry it was swarming in flies going right into it's coat. It had another three areas of fry strike and would have been dead or well on the way by the morning.

That is horrible Clive - it is always good to have a reminder that it isn't just sheep that get them.

I think we recently mentioned problems with flies, we have just used 'Spot On' which I have to say has eradicated any problem we had, animals now free of the problem, which also treats Lice.

I have clients with Highland cattle who have to use "Spoton" as a routine preventative for fly strike in young calves - all treated within a few days of birth I think. I don't think they have ever had it in new born calves but frequent in calves a few weeks old.
