Have you made your swap yet? If you are still considering different breeds give a thought to Lleyn's. A very hardy welsh breed with great milklyness and mothering. We have had them for 8 years and have a pure flock and cross with Blackface. Even with the bad winter we just had they still managed to have a good crop of lambs. This is an island hill farm with very poor ground so they need to be hardy.

I'll second that. Got 350 Lleyn ewes and they are very easy, motherly and if you get the right strain, very calm and easy-going. Ours don't seem to get dirty either hardly at all and when they do they're easy to dag because of the wool/hair mix. Only trouble with the swap idea in this case would be that you would pay more for a reasonable ram than you might get for a 14 month old heifer, and the breeding sheep wouldn't be cheap at the moment either!
