Beryl is in hospital.
I have just spoken to Beryl, she rang me while she was waiting for the ambulance to arrive to take her to Barnstaple Hospital, as she found she was unable stand up after using the computer this afternoon.

Have just spoken to Beryl. She says she thinks she is improving. Doesn't like the hospital food! If anybody is going to see her, I would love to but it is about 300 miles, I think she would like some bottled spring water. She doesn't drink the hospital tap water which I can understand!

Hello Everyone,
If you know Beryl through these pages why not send her a short Get Well note to cheer her up.
It looks like she will be in hospital over Christmas and she will be fairly down about that, most of us are too far away to visit often, so she could do with something to raise her spirits!!!
A Dexter photo or two popped in with the letter would be even better.
The Address is.
Beryl Rutherford
Victoria Ward
North Devon District Hospital
Raleigh Park
Barnstaple
Devon
EX31 4JB
The hospital phone number is: 01271 322 577
However Beryl has a mobile, which has been turned up so she can hear, the number is: 07811 294053
So you could even give her a call and wish her a Happy Christmas as well :D !!!!

Beryl is a bit concerned, her phone ran out of charge and she thinks people may have tried to ring her but it is charged again now, so please try again!

Dear All,
I have spoken again with the hospital this morning and Beryl is still 'very poorly'.
She has pneumonia and is struggling to talk. The doctors have changed her antibiotics to a stronger type late last night as she was not responding to the original type. This morning she is not responding to the new antibiotics but they need to give it 24 hours to see if it has any effect.
The Sister I spoke with this morning advised that 'she is at a crossroads and could go either way' and that in view of this they are relaxing the visiting hours.
I will be going in shortly as soon as things are sorted out here and Stephanie is on her way round from Wales.
I have only known her for such a short period of time so I know that there are many of you out there to whom she means so much more and who are not so fortunate as to be able to see her. Please think of her and hopefully she will take the right road and come back to full health.
I will keep you updated as to progress as the hospital will now be calling me with updates.
Kind regards

Dear All,
I was with Beryl for about three hours this afternoon and sdaly there is little improvement on my earlier post. The Ward Sister confirmed that it is chronic pneumonia and that both her lungs are severly affected.
Stephanie arrived before I left and will stay with her as long as she can. Phillippa Laing also arrived as I left. They both have my contact numbers as do the ward staff so I will try to update you if anything changes.
Very late tonight or early tomorrow morning will be the critical time when they will know if the medication is working.

Dear All,
Stephanie called me as she left to say that the Sister assessed Beryl just before they left and there was some improvement. Their thinking is that perhaps the antibiotics are working.
She is not out of the woods yet but there is some improvement.
Great news indeed!!

Dear All,
When Philippa visited Beryl today she was was quite obviously delighted to see one of her oldest friends and wouldn't stop talking, and when we left the hospital at four this afternoon, we both felt Beryl was fighting every step of the way, she told me she still had work to do. I know she has a huge mountain to climb, but if anyone can get there it will be Beryl.
Beryl, if our thoughts and good wishes have any power, you will overcome this obstacle.
With love . . . . Fiona and Philippa

Does any one know whether Beryl has been taught how to read text messages?!
I have not managed to get hold of her on her mobile since before Christmas, but if she is having difficulty talking then perhaps the mobile is turned off? I have texted her but don't want to bother her with her mobile bleeping if she does not want messages or cannot read them.
Please give her my very best wishes.
Penny
