Hi

I am looking to hire a non-short black or red bull to serve 3 cows. I am in somerset and would be looking for a bull close by just for simplicity, also BVD vaccinated please. If anyone can help please let me know.

Many thanks

People in many parts of the country are having the same problem because of the fear of TB, or because the people who hire bulls themselves have had TB on the farm and have ceased hiring out bulls.

One option which you might consider is to buy a bull, use it, and then feed it up and beef it. They can go into beef burgers and pies. If you get your figures right you could actually do that for no cost or even a profit!

And/or, you could consider getting a youngster/weaner bull, bring him on and then do what I've just said, or selling him yourself. I've just sold a weaner bull to someone with exactly the same problem.

I already have a wonderfull bull that does his job very well, unfortunately the three heifers i want to get in calf are his daughters.

I think perhaps A.I might have to be an option, i have tried it before and was not successful especially with heifers bit i will give it another go.
