We have a vacancy for an assistant herdsman (or woman) working with our herd of approx 200 Dexters and a small flock of Jacob sheep & pigs in South Gloucestershire Nr Bristol.

General duties would include the day to day care & feeding, calving, cleaning out, tractor driving, muck spreading, chain harrowing, hay making etc. and also assisting with the training & preparation of 12+ Show Dexters and attending various shows with them.

A level of experience is prefferable BUT genuine enthusiasm, flexibility and care & compassion for our animals is much more important.

We are willing to take on an apprentice and assist with courses at Ag College for the right person.

This can be a part time or full time position and wages will be set according to age, experience and skills/qualifications.

Please email CV to barrycambridge@aol.com

If you've got 200 Dexters in a new herd, how many do you plan to have eventually? We started with 20 bought-in females just 5 years ago and now have 120.

We are not a completely new herd ahving kept Dexters for a number of years, although have only registered with the DCS last year.

Our intention is to breed enough to be able to kill 10 or 12 per month and therefore intend to keep at least 150 breeding females and anticipate the eventual herd size to be 300+.

At present we have 5 Bulls, 100+ cows & hiefers in calf and followers.

The position offered should be an interesting and rewarding one, especially for anyone with a genuine interest in Dexters.
