I have just recieved Beryl's book and would highly recommend it to anyone intersted in animals. It is beautifully written with lots of fasinating life history, and very interesting facts. Thank goodness this treasure is now safely in print for everyone to enjoy and thank you Duncan for making sure we all have the opportunity to buy it. Fiona.

Hello Kathy,
If no-one has organised supply in Canada why not do what I did to get it to UK at reasonable cost and contact Ellyn Howes to arrange a mass posting for a quantity you think the Canadian enthusiasts will buy?
I did not envisage getting payment from abroad and I think it would add a bit to your costs to send me a payment. I have just priced the book here at the sterling £s equivalent to the Aus$25 plus bank charges and postage. I am not running it as a profit making exercise.
You will find Ellyn Howes email address on dex-info.net .
If you still want me to look into getting one to you let me know and I will investigate.

Duncan, I just remembered that I have a friend coming from Wales (yes, a Dexter breeder!). Is the book very large and heavy? I could send you payment (a postal money order in pounds stirling- not costly and you just take it to your bank like a cheque) and have you mail it to Wales.

That is fine by me, Kathy, the book weighs about 375g, the cost including postage is £12.80, you or your friend send me cheque or postal order and I will send it. It certainly is a very interesting book about a very interesting herd with a very interesting owner.

Just thought I'd remind everyone of the availablity of Beryl Rutherfords book, "My Love Affair With The Dexter". It should be compulsory reading for anyone with an interest in the breed, and it is available as detailed in the first two posts of this topic. There has been a steady stream of sales, with an enquiry from France today!

Just received my copy and dipped in immediately - most interesting and fun to read. My Father died in 1961 and his wish was to have Dexters running in the front parkfields of his house.....if things had been different he would have enjoyed knowing Beryl!

Perhaps worth mentioning that I will be attending the Rare Breeds Sale at Melton Mowbray, selling Burnside Challenger, and if anyone wants to collect copies of "My Love Affair With The Dexter" I can bring them with me. Collecting them there should save £1.60 postage on every copy, so if you order in advance I will have your copy there. More than half of the importation has gone already so advance orders would help me assess when to import more.

Thank you so much, Duncan, for putting a reminder about purchasing this book for Christmas. I had been intending to buy it for ages but have always got distracted by more mundane jobs once aaway from the computer screen. This last prompt finally made me get my cheque in the post, and I received my book 2 days later! Such efficiency!
Thank you also to Beryl, for this book. It is excellent and I do think that it is an important read for everyone who has dexters as there is so much to be learnt from it. Anyone who has come into dexters more recently takes it forgranted that the Golden Rule when breeding is to use a non-short bull on a short legged cow to avoid bulldogs, without a second thought. But we have so much to be grateful for, that this fact was established through a lot of hard work, wisdom and stockmanship. Now that we have the C test, life becomes even easier. One of my first cows was a Woodmagic girl, who sadly I lost in Foot and Mouth despite the fact that we were not even contiguous. Unfortunately the RBST did not fight my corner but I am very glad to hear that they were prepared to fight for the Woodmagic herd as a whole.
Definitely worth going to get your cheque books and contacting Duncan as soon as you have finished on this site!

Thank you Penny for all your kind observations. I was so sorry to hear you lost your animal, I always thought the contiguous culls were the most unkind of all. Whether the Rare Breed support would have saved my herd, I don’t know, but the promise was something I held on to, in an effort to remain sane, it was a nightmare of a situation, for us all.
Throughout my life, I have been very lucky, there always seemed to be someone to put out a helping hand, when needed, and I think we are particularly blessed, in that respect, within the breed.
My book would never have been written, but for the urging and support of Ellyn Howes, and I am very grateful to Duncan for making it so easily available over here. Keeping my Dexters for fifty odd years should have enabled me to pick up some useful information, and help others to realise, that mistakes and disasters don’t mean the end of the world. With stock you never cease learning . Probably the most valuable asset is a sense of humour. Certainly keeping Dexters can give, as well as the occasional heartache, an enormous amount of fun and pleasure.
