This is the first time I've posted a topic, after viewing the other posts about adding pictures i though i would give it go. We have only recently had dexters and this was our first, her name is Lulu from the Gallipot herd.
Isn't she beautiful!!!

Hi Tooloos, how many Dexters do you have now after recently acquiring them. Certainly has a nice head ---would be nice to see the rest of her ???

we curently have 5 breeding cows, 2 older heifers,1 6 month heifer who is curently being weaned at the moment and we are due two more calves. Here is a pictuer of lulu in full. Abbie and Dig x

She looks nice tooloos is she non short? are you planning to increase your herd either by breeding or purchase I know nosy beggar

she s non short due to calve in december to a non short bull . we will breed our own replacements but also be on the lookout for cows which will improve the herd . we ve just bought a bull watercress wenlock who is short leg to cross with our long leg cows and ai our three short leg with long leg to produce medium leg to cross back with wenlock

Do you need a bull for so few cows? I am not being funny i only have 6 plus 2 replacements but is there enough work for him. We hire our bull as we need him and pay by the week. Obviously you need to hire a bull that you like and if you can see a few of his family all the better.
Perhaps you could hire yours out in the quiet times. Problem then is TB test each time he moves

we are in a high tb risk area so every time we get a bull in it needs testing before it leaves we also have the cows calving at different times so a bull might have two months or more before next animal on in which the hirer might want him moved on . we decided that to hire in a bull and tb test etc more than once a year it was cheaper to buy a nice one that we can also show during the summer and as he s young he shouldn t lose too much either . we also like the idea of a closed herd at the minute so not to bring in too many problems

Is Wenlock a local herd? or a herd you have seen around and like. Gallipot is a well known herd but I am no expert on breeding pedigrees. You will have to put the rest on now tooloos I have yet to try :D but I have just bought a digital camera so watch this space. don't hold your breath I fall asleep reading the instructions they are so boring :D

no we saw the bull at the melton mowbray show and thought he stood out [ in our eyes anyway but he got a third in the show ] . the watercress herd is from shropshire and we saw the cows and they were very nice cows with good udders etc which is one of the things we would like to improve. lulu is the only gallipot cow we have the rest are galehill dexters which we are also very impressed with being beefy animals but also very good mothers , and the other animal is our first born heifer calf out of our red cow galehill morello which is looking very promising already

So what are your plans for your youngsters? Will you be looking to sell youngsters or take them on to finish and then sell the meat? ???

Tooloos, your breeding program sounded as though you meant that breeding your 3 short leg with a long leg was going to produce medium leg calves. Have I misunderstood you?

Short bull on her long cows and an AI long bull to her short cows AI should help broaden your blood base without bringing any disease hopefully . But getting mediums ??? Not gauranteed is it Margaret?

perhaps they won t be medium but we re trying to keep our cows on the short to medium size preferably which is why we re going about it this way
