hi everyone,

There is a rare breeds sale at Holsworthy market on saturday, and as i live a fair distance away i rang Kivells to find out short or non-short, they had not been supplied with that information. Is it just me that thinks that when markets have these sells it would be extremely helpfull if the people who were hoping to sell their animals would tell the markets if they were short or non-short, or maybe its just me being picky, what do you think?

Hi Cyndy,
surely if the auctioneers were organised and the sellers keen enough, then that question would get answered without hesitation.

But do the owners know whether their cattle are short or non-short and the auctioneers probably havent got a clue, you only have to look at this site I think sometimes they are described incorrectly, not on purpose. I have a bull who a field officer referred to as short- I probably would thought so If I hadnt seen him as a youngster and knew his breeding, he has been tested so I know he's non short. Do you want to know a visual answer or a genetic answer.

The genetic answer is the only one that matters. Perhaps the future lies in genetically non carriers but visually short.

Cyndy - I think it's a great idea to have as much info as possible and would like to see dexterdom do a lot more to promote sales that include, or may include Dexters. I did that little TEST website www.dextersales.co.uk and if something like that was promoted wherever possible (bulletin etc) and kept up to date, it may stimulate more people to buy and sell at sales.

But...using the terms short and non-short would be misleading. People who are breeding physically short animals without the dwarf gene can't use the word "short", because that will tell people they are carriers, which they may not be.

Hi Cyndy
Have you got a copy of the catalogue for the sale. If not I could fax you the relevant pages. We are planning on going so maybe see you there (I'll be the one trying to stop hubby from bidding on all of them!) :D

I've just received a PDF of the catalogue from the auctioneers, and they show colour so, as Mark says, there was no reason why they couldn't have put short/non-short info as well if the owners had asked them to.

If I was selling I would put more info like whether they are horned etc. We once went 150 miles to see cattle to buy and they were all very nice but had horns, which we didn't want, so we turned around and came back!

If anyone wants the PDF then send me an email (clive@broomcroft.com) and I'll forward it to you or just go onto Kivells website and register.

Hi Cyndy,
I have had a catalogue and there are only two sellers entered. One is M Mountjoy (knivers meadow), unfortunately I am at work and I cannot remember the name of the other, but the prefix is maple leaf. If you have a herdbook you should be able to find a phone number for them with this info. Hope this helps.
