I discovered today that some normal livestock markets do regular pedigree breed sales. Has anyone any experience of these? I intend to contact the nearest to me (which is at least in Wales!) on Monday to get more details. Obviously my interest at present is selling the sheep but I wonder if they would also be a reasonable standby for Dexter owners. I'll let you know what I find out if it seems to be of interest.

I have updated the map of sales and called it www.dextersales.co.uk. It looks like a lot are based upon sheep timing because they happen in Sept, often on the same day! Not only the same day or just a week or so apart, but also when some Dexter breeders especially the bigger ones, will if like us, be pre-occupied with normal sheep sales.

So most of these sales are note suitable for us and we wouldn't even attend any, let alone sell. If sale days for Dexters were to be pushed, then they would need to be spread out time-wise, NEVER conflict with the National Show and Sale and try and avoid the sheep season. The rare breed sales mainly do none of these things.

There is always a rare breed sale at Hexham. This year it is the 15th August --a Friday--- so you could add that to your map. There are usually a few Dexters there.
cheers Louise

Thanks Ken/Louise - I'll put them on later today. If anyone has any more actual or possible sales venues and dates for Dexter Cattle let me know.

No joy with the 'pedigree breeding stock' sale I contacted. Once again, he said they sold the large commercial sheep and didn't think the small Shetlands would sell well. Probably implications for the small Dexter here so not worth pursuing. :(

Looks like they will be going to Bridgewater on August 9th if all goes well. Thanks for mentioning that Ken.
Of course if they don't sell they can't come back because of the BT rules but that would apply anywhere at present.
