I have a heifer that is due to calve fairly soon. She is long legged and is quite a bony animal. On her left flank there is a very pronounced lump which is probably about a foot or so long. It is not tender at all and I am presuming it is the calf.
Other than that and some udder springing she doesn't look big in any way.

Is this the likely explanation?

Nothing should show up as a lump on the flank unless it is outside the abdominal muscles. Most of the left flank is going to be covered internally by rumen. If there is as lump outside the flank it is most likely to be a haematoma, filled with blood. If it is a heamatoma it is probably best left alone.
