I have recently herd that the RBST are supporting a new Rare Breeds sale - to include Dexters- at Clitheroe Auction Mart (Lancs).
The proposed date for the inaugural sale is May 19th 2008 - when we should all have grass available for new stock.

I havent heard of this event.
In the past spring sales, especially dexter sales, have not gone down very well as apposed to the traditional autumn sales, i dont know why. Who needs to buy dexters in Sept/ Oct just to start feeding them thru the winter.

Thanks Mark that has really cheered me up as circumstances dictate that all being well it will be September when I have to either find homes for or send to slaughter about 15 - 20 cows. So that will be slaughter then I suppose. Great

Sylvia, the bigest problem you have is your TB status not the time of year you are selling. as I have said before I am lucky enough to be in a four yearly test parish and have been advised to buy from a producer in a similar situation and not from anyone in less than that.
Is it possible for you to have the animals killed and only supply the sides of beef to someone who has an outlet? It may be worth investigating.

Sylvia, i did say i cant understand why buy in Autumn, but loads of people do! In fact my own sales mostly come together in Autumn,so dont get down about it, the best selling time is yet to come.

I do think this boring weather is getting people down. Lets hope the law give us a break with the Hindu bull case !?! Failing that a good dose of sunshine will hopefully bring out the optimism (and the hay making).

Spring sales are much more sensible. That's when there's more grass available for grazing. Its the time of the year when we get the best prices for our steers.
If you're in a Tb controlled area, you'll need to have them tested shortly before sale won't you? So if the animals are clear, why should selling them be a problem? ???
