It is important Rod, that any Dexter inspectors are listened to at any sale. Last year at Carlisle there were quite a few unregistered dexters... one I liked greatly, a dun heifer - now, the auctioneer was told that subsequent registration would be costly and a nuisance but he did not tell the bidding public to the annoyance of the Dexter owners present.
I heard someone remark about the resulting low price and another said 'Oh that's because they are only dexters!'

We need sales of our cattle to be conducted with the approval of our Council, otherwise, 'only' dexters will get 'only' prices.

Rod, I understand your frustration and indeed anger at what you see as being a wrong by 'council'. The end part of your post suggests to me that you will no longer be 'posting' on this site. If that is true, you are denying us your views and opinion, which as this site is an open forum would not be fair.
Rod, we want your input, and everyone who uses this site should not forget that whatever your point of veiw, there is usually someone out there who agrees with you. Where would we be if no one ever rocked the boat.

Can I join with Martin in urging Rod not to stop contributing to this discussion site, it is a great exchange point for views on a wide range of subjects and all views are important. Sometimes I get a bit annoyed that Council members seem to show little interest or input, but as a member of a committee which to a certain extent has to function a bit like the Cabinet, they are not always as free to sound off in public as even they would wish. But we do need the voice of dissent to be heard from time to time and this board is an excellent place to do it.

Some can influence matters best by being part of committees etc, and others by expressing opinions outwith these situations, we all have to judge where we can best contribute. It may change of course and there is a good case for intermittent membership of such bodies, one of the reasons why there is usually a clause limiting continuous membership of governing bodies.

It is very good to see on a board such as this that individuals we might vehemently disagree with on one subject may be in very close agreement on others. Lets all keep contributing, value differing opinions and celebrate agreements!

I have to reply to Rod on his comments of the email to Mark, it is the fastest way possible to inform those the site, secondly, has he ever WRIITEN to Council with his concerns on any of his topic he has discussed on Mark's website, the answer is no,

Well, all I can say is, you are VERY fortunate to have such sales at all. All we have are general auctions and NONE here on Vancouver Island. And as for disagreements, look what happened to the American Dexter organization.

I've just had a "Paperwork Day" and have been sorting out my staffing (I have a shop) to be able to attend York, and sell some beasts. It is with some dismay that I have just read the correspondence about this.

Where do I buy and sell Dexters if not at York? I simply have not the time to trail around the country to sales that sell penny numbers of Dexters. Just yesterday I was travelling up our valley and admiring my neighbours modern breed cattle. The thought occurred to me that he simply needs to dtrive into Kendal Auction Mart to get a good price.

Put simply: If the DCS does not do EVERYTHING in its power to encourage these sales then the breed will never get anywhere.

Where is the alternative sale going to be? and why do I have to find out from this excellent forum rather than the DCS.

Come on chaps (and girls!) wake up or the breed will go backwards.

Hi Peter, i know i keep going on about it, but the Rare & Native Breed sale at Melton Mowbray on Sat 10th Sept is proving the sale to replace Stoneleigh.
Entries have since closed for this year but bear it in mind for next year.Travel down for a look.
There are 800 rare breed sheep, rare breed pigs and poultry, stands and a farmers market
Dexter entries stand at 39, with a lot of show cattle for sale as well as a lot of shorts, and bulls.

Its ok having sales in Melton Mowbray, Stoneleigh or anywhere else. If someone is in the north of England York is easier to get to. I am one of the unlucky ones who does not have a local sale and have not got the time to travel at least 4 hours in each direction to attend a sale that may or may not have a beast that I would be interested in.
Peter, in your position I would support York. If you have the right cattle they will sell well and everyone will be happy! Or will they?
