Hi all,
In answer to Ted " Is there a non-short breed champion out there"
YES! my non-short 3 yr old bull, Breoch Sultan is 2005 Sup. breed Champion of Great Yorkshire Show! He was measured and is under 45" tall so may reach 45" (112.5cms) in next few months but not likely to grow more.
He is very beefy and caught the eye of other breed specialists which was most pleasing..... We do have straws available!

Ted - the judge at the GYS was Michael Kemmish
Sultan has been seen by 4 judges (for inspections etc) and regarded as 'special' by all of them and I feel I am living out a dream!
His son is shaping up so far but we shall see....
I was nearly in your area again and would have phoned... when are you coming North?

Ted, you haven't been reading your bulletin!
Kate and Tony Reeds bull Moomin Macduff is BD1N, ie non-short, and has had many championships. He won the D.C.S. points cup last year!
We had a number of non-shorts at the Royal this year up in the prize line.
As a judge I will and have put up non-shorts but the quality must be there for them to win. As judges we are looking for good quality cows conforming to the breed standard, sadly a lot of the non-short cows presented are not good quality and therefore won't win. If you have good ones get them out, let's see them!

Can someone clarify something please? If a short looking Dexter tests as a non-carrier of the bulldog gene is it still classed as a short or does it become a short looking non-short?

Here in the states the PDCA Genetics Committee Chair recommended that we adopt the common clinical terminology to describe the three types of Dexters. Specifically, Severely Affected (bulldog), Affected (carrier) and Normal (non-carrier). This will give appropriate terms to describe the phenotype (outward appearance) of the animal and eliminate the use of inaccurate terms like "Short-leg" and "Long-leg."
