NZ Migration

Has anybody got a private windmill? We expressed an interest in one when there was some publicity in the papers but we fear that there are too many trees nearby.

We've got the same arguments going on here. The Greens (one of our polical partys)are pushing windfarms, so that we don't rely solely on hydopower stations. As our population grows, the pressure to use alternative power grows too. (Lots of of UK immigrants :laugh: ) But a lot of people are opposed to them because they don't want their views spoilt.

Until another, less visible means of power generation comes along, I don't think we have a lot of choice. NZ WON'T go down the Atomic power station road. So wind turbines and solar panals on houses seem the best alternative to our stretched hydropower stations. Besides, there are some places in NZ that definitely lend themselves to wind turbines. Like the Wellington area, where parliament sits. ??? You can guess where all the hot air comes from. :laugh:

When we build our new house, we'll be installing solar panels. The Greens are trying to get them mandatory for all new houses being built. We've looked at a solar (infra red) powered water pump, simply because its cheaper than running electrity down to the dam. Small windmills are still fairly costly here and although some folk do have them, they're not as common as they would be if someone could come up with a cheaper kitset. With good instructions, mind.

I guess if fuel keeps going up, there may not be as many tourists to enjoy the view anyway, and if the world doesn't get its act together and realize that there are generations to follow us, that would I guess like a reasonable quality of life and start looking at more renewable energy sources the future may start to look quite grim for the kids of today. JMHO

The amount of us that have read and replied to this topic makes me wonder......are we all a little jealous that we don't have the courage to move to NZ as well?! ???

I don't know if it takes courage or not. I believe you just have to want something different. I am certainly not jealous of any one that wishes to emigrate, my brother did it 30 odd years ago and is very happy in his new found homeland of Canada. I believe I live in the best country in the world, and would swap with no one. My roots are here, my family (or most of them) are here, my history is here, & most of all I like it here. As a young man I was in the military, and saw a fair chunk of the world, but I always looked forward to coming home. I cannot imagine anywhere else making me feel so comfortable and at ease. I'm British & proud of it, & proved it by risking my life for my Queen & Country. How could I live anywhere else.

I agree. I was born in London and admit that its a bit terrible there but since moving to sunny devon, I would never move to another country, but that's just my point of view. The main problem is that many of my friends refuse to go outside because of the mud!
