Orphan Calf

Post by debra wiltshire »

Hello,

First time we have experienced this but we have a 6 week old heifer calf which we are bottle feeding. We are offering
her a small amount of calf nuts and she has had access to hay.
Would appreciate some advice...how many ltr. you think we should be feeding her a day...and for how long should we be
offering her milk?
She is today going from a stable to an outside pen with another mum and calf around her. When we know that she will come
to us for a feed we will open the pen up to the paddocks.

Any advice would be lovely IMG_0983.JPG

Keep the milk going for a while yet, she needs to be on the hard food proper before you wean her off.

See the thread "how much milk does an orphan calf need" from May 2018, it's a couple of pages down the list of topics. The heifer I was rearing then was weaned at 5 months on to grass. She had a super bull calf in March this year. She was offered sugar beet pellets as a baby, I've never had any success with either lambs or calves eating weaning mixes, hens end up getting most of it. Everything here eats sugar beet and learns from mum.
