Has anyone else started feeding hay?

Post by Saffy »

We started giving hay to these four yesterday, seems very early to me but they were delighted to see it!

They also get a handful of suckler rolls in the mornings.

I usually start feeding my main herd about March.
They stay outside on large area of hill/permanent grass/scrub and get some feeding in spring.

I'm short of hay now since two fields where I usually buy hay are still standing grass. If I start feeding hay in Sept I'll have run out before winter gets started!

OMG Louisa that's not good! I was lucky and made mine early July and probably have enough to last but I don't usually need to feed anything this early...so I don't want to be too generous just yet.

we have been feeding hay for a week it stops them eating acorns which are large in numbers this year and are causing lots of problems for all stock around here

been feeding some most of summer certainly since the rain started as i like some dry food in them to help with staggers but we are lucky have plenty of grass and silage. Still have one field to cut.

given the ones at home a bale this morning as stood bealing at gate at evening. not complaining as it gives us a chance to use up the round bales we have before the cattle come in for winter. still got a couple of small padocks to get 2nd cut off as silage, hopefully soon if a dry week is forecast
