TB Sweepstake

Post by ShaunP »

Had the unfortunate experience of finding out one of my herd had extesives lesions when taken for slaughter yesterday. I am now under restriction and TB testing due out on Monday. Animal was brought to the farm in Feb from a TB clear home. Another taken yesterday was all clear of lesions.

I only have 4 others here.

So any guesses what will be the results from the tests next week!!!!

It is a situation that I have seen in several of my farming friends and never really understood what it means. Now the boot is on my foot I am starting to see what all the fuss is about!!

Well...its a good start but it is still horrible to have another test hanging over you.

Another 2 tests to go. I dont have any cattle in ajoining fields and animal that had it is from a TB clear herd, so the problem is what to do on going. Shall I just stick to sheep???

It is SO difficult when this happens, nobody has the answer.

Many years ago I bought a cow from a "TB free herd" and a 4 year area. She was taken but showed no lesions, however my son who is a vet says that doesn't always mean "clear" as lesions can be miniscule. So I was still very unsure for a while.

However more recently a friend bought another animal - a bull from that same herd. It didn't have TB but it did have something else, I can't remember if it was IBR or BVD that it was carrying. Turns out that the owners hired the bull out.

If a bull is going around herds or for that matter cows are going to shows there is a much higher chance of coming into contact with disease and bringing it back to the herd.

My advice is keep a herd as closed as possible. If buying in, test for everything preferably before purchase, if that isn't possible isolate and then test before allowing a new animal into the rest of the herd.

Keep your own bull or use AI.
