the problem was lack of buyers. went for a coffee after the haltered dexter cattle, returned to watch the dispersal section and had no trouble getting a seat.

didnt have a trailer with me but if i had would have been tempeted at the prices by a couple of cows with steers, would think could have culled the cows at weaning and been left with a cheap or even free steer.

after taking fuel, entry fees and commision into account some vendors may have been better off taking that route.

Or they could have advertised their stock a bit more in advance - I'd completely managed to miss the catalogue for the dispersals but would probably have gone if I'd seen some pictures of stock online. Melton Mowbray is a long way to go on the off chance

Vendors would have been better off beefing these animals themselves not giving them away to other people. This is not doing the breed or their reputation any good.

It all depends upon what situation the person selling is in as to whether they would have been better off. As I said earlier, it is all about cashflow for me, as a buyer, having to stump up the few grand on sale dale in a lump sum. £350 in cash may be better for the seller than taking on extra time and expense selling as beef - time & money that vendors maybe don't have, for whatever reason, lets not presume that the vendors had that freedom. If the vendors didn't have time or resources to advertise them widely more I doubt they'd be in a position to beef.

It would do no good to the breed, long term, to lose quality bloodlines, so if these go for less than beef price now but to a herd that is going to breed from them, and maintain pedigree records, it isn't necessarily bad news.

At the other end of the scale, and they have been bought to be beefed, then surely that is a good thing too, as they won't be adding to the pool of available breeding stock.

If anyone is interested in Woodmagic Penny pies lot 51 or lot 52 the purchaser would be prepared to sell as he is a dealer so if you want his details contact me and will pass them on.

Correct me if Im wrong but this was a breed sale and I dont think there was any presence from the society (arrived just as sale started and only had quick look at cattle beforehand)

The Shetland Cattle Society had no cattle entered yet had a stand so did British White with only 4/5 cattle, not sure about Hereford/Red Poll or Irish Moiled

not sure how many people this concerns but payment for any livestock sold will be made by bacs next Tuesday, 30th September...not sure what the delay is...maybe this is normal. Seems a long time to me :(

looks like its month end payment, probably in the small print on entry form. I heard someone comment at the sale about it only being cash or card on the day, no cheques so they wont have been waiting for money coming in.

apart from the distance the other thing stopping us selling at melton is the high entry fees and commission.
