Cheap Heifers Wanted

Post by Rob R »

Good, now that's got your attention

With the sale season just over 6 weeks away, I was wondering what bulling heifers/other stock would be available, at auction or privately, this autumn? Breeding, prices, pictures etc.

I don't have any money, but I do have these magic beans...

Information is limited but as far as I know Magic Beans have only bean used on one occasion to purchase an old milk cow. Lets have no more of this Jack and the Beans talk.

Seriously though, I do think that a lot of the problem, when animals are presented for sale is the lack of promotion that means it is pot-luck whether the right buyers turn up on the day. Some breeders do put a lot of effort into making their herds, and hence their stock, desirable, but for people like me, who have to save the pennies, a bit of fore-sight goes a long way towards it. I was prompted by an ad that basically said something like "Dexter cows for sale, ring for details..."

I think you are right Rob.

Usually when I sell a few of my Herdwick ewe lambs I make sure the info goes into the catalogue about the top flocks that my ewes and tup came from, also I put in about the vaccinations they have had and worming and I have got used to topping the market. Last time I got lazy and didn't bother, I was not happy with the price I recieved - :( lesson learnt!

I have two young cows to go either privately or at either the Carlisle or York sale.

Southlands Bluebell F38251, blk/ns, 03/10.
Sire Grindle Blackthorn
Dam Toadhole Coral

Southlands Twig Let F40276, blk/ns, 01/11.
Sire Grindle Blackthorn
Dam Holmside Birch

Maidens both, as I had intended to leave them until they could be AI'd with the cow I had also bought, then the AI technician forgot to get straws (for 6mnths, unfortunately he has a monopoly) and finally my last batch of straws seem to have all failed, the bull or transport of? Remains to be seen. To be on the safe side both to be AI'd with Moonim Jupiter this time later this month.

I'll have a weaned heifer ready for York:
Zanfara Lucinda F47667, born 16/4/14, black, non-short, horned
Sire Baranduin Delta M5991
Dam Zanfara Lucasta F40399
Halter trained and shown at Aldborough & Boroughbridge show 20th July, 2nd place, will probably be entered for Stokesley show
Visitors welcome by appointment and a deposit secures.
There may also be a weaned steer or two, depending on whether the enquiries I've had come to anything. People seem to think one has steers fit for slaughter cluttering up the place.
