Re: Calf dehorning
Using poll is tempting, but I would rather have to tip the horns than shorten the pedigree.

Hi Margaret
I have a single polled heifer that has gust scored VG86 (the highest score possible on a first lactation) so I think I am on the right track regardless of different perceptions of purity.

Congratulations Ian. You must be very happy that your breeding choices have been so heartily endorsed by the classifier.
Diversity of individuals' breeding goals maintains diversity in the national gene pool. However, most Dexter breeders will be confronted with the 'disbud or horns' issue for the foreseeable future. We have found Portasol gas disbudders to be a handy piece of equipment, small and light. We also have a Buddex rechargeable, but the size and weight is better suited to a man's hand.

Re: Calf dehorning
margaret are the portasol and buddex conventional disbudding irons or the type where you just make a ring round the bud, have an express version that is that type but not used it yet. trying it on a steer when we next get one.

Re: Calf dehorning
They make a ring around the bud Steve. Some users say they flick the bud out with the hot iron after they cauterise. I have not seen that done, and have yet to be convinced that there is any advantage to be gained in doing that.
