post 1996 slaughter

Members may or may not be aware that brain stem testing is NOT now routine on animals born post 1996. This means that cull cows over 72 months can now be killed at any slaughterhouse, providing they are fit and well.
This fact has not been very well publicised, my local slaughterhouse was not informed by the ministry and found out by accident!
I always used to kill older cows as I do not choose to put my animals through the market system.
I can make a lot more money this way, the fillets are absolutely fine, rump and sirloin is sold as braising steak and joints for pot roasts. The rest makes very good mince. If your local abattoir say they cannot do it get them to check with the meat hygiene service.

P.S. I think the latter months of 1996 are O.K. can't remember whether it was June or July when the cut off date is.
