Looking fof young bull

Post by marcus »

Hi,
I am looking for a young bull to bring on, any age from six months upwards considered. I have mainly Knightsway breeding, so am looking for a different line. It has to be a non-short black with a beefy conformation. I DO NOT want a polled animal and it MUST NOT have Woodmagic breeding.
Fussy b***** I know.
I can be contacted on Mondays/Tuesdays on 01769 560976, 10am and 1pm best time to catch me in.
If anyone out there can help I would be gratefull.
many thanks,
Marcus.

Son of Nithsdale Dougal out of Bayrigg Willow presently 6 months old still running with his mum, black, non short, been de-horned, Dougal throws good beefy calves, and we have had no difficulty with cows calving to him.

Steer from the same bull & similar cow line can be seen running in the herd and shows good shape and size which is why my other half persuaded me not to castrate this one. I am presently offshore and do not have access to pedigree or lineage but if there is interest I can arrange to dig the info out

Would run him on for a couple of months yet for preference

He knows what a bucket is for but has never seen the inside of a shed

Cheers
Brian

Slightly off topic but following on from the 'MUST NOT have Woodmagic breeding' would it be possible for someone to explain to a newbie why people do not like Woodmagic's? I know I have some but I am interested in people's opinions and would appreciate the education.
Thanks

I'm interested in a young bull too. Similar spec in that NO polled or Woodmagic breeding. Different in that I'm looking for something with a good dairy background, don't mind a light back end if carrying good teat placement, udder conformation and milk quality. Photos of dam and sisters would be good.
In reply to why no Woodmagic, simply that this one herd has had a massive influence on the breed and it is not good policy to be over dependent on one herd.

Marcus, apologies but can you help me understand? I had thought that they were dexters and that Woodmagic was just the herd name?
Thanks

Louisa, thanks for this. Has anyone tried to quantify how big an effect? I have been told that there weren't many Dexters left at one point and I seem to recall that Beryl had them for upwards of 60 years (is that right?) if that's the case how many dexters did she breed in that time? Us anyone counted?
Thanks

Tim, a long time ago Andrew Sheppy did some work on this so he's the person to ask. I do remember an article in the Bulletin on progeny from AI bulls and Woodmagic Dormouse sired c. 250 calves when the breed was still very rare. All my foundation stock had Woodmagic in, which is why I've tried to broaden the genetic base since by not adding further Woodmagic lines.

It looks like Marcus got sorted out but I'm still on the lookout. In exchange I can offer a black non short bull born Jan , dam Zanfara Thomasina or a red short leg bull, born Feb, dam Zanfara Rebekah, both sired by Baranduin Delta. Photos on request.

Hi Louisa,
Suggest you contact Pat Short, Elmwood Dexters. I understand she has a young original population bull, i. e . no introgression from start of herd book, and no Woodmagic breeding in him. His name is Elmwood Alfie if you want to look him up.
