What price for a EX classified bull?

Post by Mark Bowles »

We now have several EX classified bulls, my question to you all is what price should they sell for or would the price not be affected?
For what it's worth i would put a price of around £2000 or more having seen most of them.

I don't think the price should be affected when you see the animal in the flesh, but it should make selection a lot quicker and easier as well as improving sire selection based upon on progeny. It will be interesting to see what the forthcoming sale season is like - provided people sell their EX bulls, of course!

Hmmm I'm not sure. It isn't entirely how good the bull looks that matters to me, although I would agree that an ugly bull is more likely to produce ugly calves but it would be of greater interest to me to hear that a bull had a Dam, sisters and hopefully even daughters that had been classified as Excellent.

When classification is used for commercial dairy cattle, the catalogues provided to choose a bull don't usually mention how a bull has been classified but how his female relatives have classified, including of course udder, which I believe is much more important as it is his female relatives we are trying to breed.

Off the subject but I may well be buying a new bull this year or next, and it'll be a good one. But I nothing about Linear Classification. How / where do you find out what it means? i.e. the full details. I don;t want to be just told he's good! I want to know the process to see if it applies to my requirements.

Hi Clive, phone the office and ask for a linear leaflet, that should help you understand it a little more.

First EX bull to come on the open market.
Rattycombe Arnold EX90, red bull, non-short, for sale in Cornwall £1500. See sales list.
This lady is selling her herd of reds, she has some very high classified heifers (1st calvers) VG85 out of a possible max score of 89.
