Dexter Cross Deadweights - ...anybody got some figures please?

sold out today at glasgow and edinburgh! people really enthusiastic and interested. it looked lovely packaged up.

see what feed back i get in the next few days. still got half left to sell next week.

I'm not surprised the cow beef was good. Back in the 80's when I was collecting skeletons, I munched through cows up to 17 years old. The trick I was taught by an old butcher/grazier was to get them really really thin, then feed them up. That way they were putting on fresh muscle, as well as fat, which would therefore be tender. A very old cow in "good" condition, that had never been thin, I was told would not be such good eating.

i am useless at recording details, but we have back a Dangus, bullock 21 months old. 240kg O4L. was not just grass fed had some barley, he had a bad shoulder at turnout so i wanted to get him away quickly but he ended up a fine beast.
he is probably only 30kg heavier than a good dexter steer, but what a differenc in yield, i will judge quality over the weekend. topside and popeseye huge in comparison.
we have our first ever heifer to be butchered back on Monday, she is pure dex and weighs about 175Kg i think was a little over fat at 5L but i will see. i will report on the taste factor.

he was born to fairly small non short cow, but a very big bull, i delivered him in a lightening storm, had to use a jack. it was one of the first jobs my new farm hand helped me with. (it did not put Dave off, he is still with us)we got him out and then ran for shelter in the pickup, quite exciting.

That's interesting dom. I've just sold a lorry load of Angus-Dexter and weighed them on a weigh bridge, they averaged 315kg's each live at 10 months of age and they have excellent shape, big bodies, small heads, very noticeable. I think they are better than an Angus, or some of them are anyway. But it'll be Christmas 2011 before we see the final results though. I've calculated that at 24 months my steers should be about 275-290 deadweight.
