I always try to make sure that I have as many cow with as small a tank as possible at the end of the run, that way, they keep on sipping it and the pipe keeps from freezing. Some people use those little drinkers that are designed for horses, that would probably work as well maybe? Having said that, out of five different pens of cattle, only two haven't frozen up, those are the ones with the least tank size to cattle number ratio.
I like the heated wire idea, but half my cattle are outside and all the sheep, and I've calculated we have about 3km of blue piping. Out in one field I have 50 1-2 year olds. They are not drinking a lot, they rush over when I fill the tank but then most of it is left because it's so cold. They're no doubt getting a lot from the moisture on the grass. Sheep are drinking literally nothing. I put a bucket out with 200 sheep and it was still there a week later even though not frozen.
